Skin treatments

Facials, peels and microneedling in Portland

Learn what common skin treatments involve, then send a consultation request to ask a local provider about them.

From light to more involved

One useful way to think about skin treatments is by how far they go. At the lighter end are facials: cleansing, exfoliation, masks and massage, done by hand. Next come chemical peels, which range from mild surface peels to stronger formulas that need more aftercare. Microneedling sits further along, since a device makes tiny controlled punctures in the skin. Light-based treatments use energy from a device and are set by the provider for each person.

This scale is rough. A strong facial can be more involved than a mild peel. The point is that skin treatments differ a lot in depth, and a licensed provider is the person to say which level, if any, makes sense for you.

How a provider decides on strength and depth

Most skin treatments come in more than one strength. Peels range from light to deeper. Microneedling needle length can change. Light-based devices have adjustable settings. Choosing among them is part of the provider's job.

To decide, a licensed provider usually looks at your skin type and tone, what you want to ask about, how your skin has reacted to past treatments, any medicines that raise sensitivity, and how much aftercare you can realistically fit around work and life. Pregnancy and recent sun exposure can rule some options out for now.

Ask the provider to explain why they picked a given strength or setting. A clear answer is a good sign that they have thought about you specifically.

The week before a skin consultation

A consultation on its own usually involves no treatment, though some providers can treat at the same visit if you both agree. If that is possible, a few things are worth asking about ahead of time:

  • whether to pause strong exfoliants or vitamin A creams beforehand
  • whether to avoid tanning, sunburn and self-tanner
  • whether to skip waxing or threading on the area
  • whether to arrive without makeup

Ask the provider or their office rather than guessing. Never stop a prescribed medicine without checking with whoever prescribed it.

Questions about skin treatments

What is the difference between a facial and a chemical peel?

A facial is a hands-on service built around cleansing, exfoliation and masks. A chemical peel is a solution applied to the skin for a set time, in strengths that range from light to deeper. Peels usually come with more specific aftercare. A provider can explain which, if either, suits your skin.

Can I have a skin treatment if I am pregnant?

Some skin treatments and products are usually avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and others may still be an option. Tell the provider at the start of the consultation, and they will decide what is suitable. For questions about your pregnancy, your own doctor or midwife is the right person to ask.

What if my skin reacts after a treatment?

Follow the aftercare instructions and contact the provider who treated you. They can tell you what is expected and what is not. For pain, signs of infection, blistering or anything that worries you, see a doctor or dermatologist. This site is not a clinic and cannot give medical advice.
